1.1 Background to the study
Generally in the whole world, particularly in Nigeria, education has been considered to be the corner - stone for development. It forms the basis for literacy, skill acquisition, technological advancement and ability to harness human and material resources towards the achievement of societal goal, (FRN, 2004).
Education is very important in any given society. It is a process by which abilities and capabilities of individual are developed. These abilities might be physical abilities, emotional abilities, social abilities and intellectual abilities. It is the actualizing of human potential so that the individual can become something more than what he was before. According to Ugwuanyi (2003) education is the process by which society establishes to assist the young to learn and understand the heritage of the past, participate productively in the society and contribute meaningfully for the development of the society.
The essence of Basic Science as stated in the National Curriculum for Junior Secondary Schools is to enable the child among others: 1. Gain the concept of the fundamental unity of science.2. Gain the commonality of approach to problem of a scientific nature and 3. Gain an understanding of the role and function of science in everyday life, and the world in which he/she lives.
Therefore, building in a school learning environment is a means of fostering academic success. Students who experience their school as a caring community become more motivated, ambiguous and engage in their learning. In particular, students’ active connection with teachers and their perceptions that teachers care about them are what stimulate their effort and engagement.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It makes sense that students would do better when they learn in positive environments. After all, most people would agree that some environments are more conducive to learning and academic performance. Just because something makes sense doesn’t mean that educators and policymakers have the information they need to make better decisions that will help students reach their goals. The study will reveal how certain environmental factors affect students, and how educators can begin making changes that will improve learning environments. The study will also show how much influence learning environments have on student success in terms of academic.
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The study will aim at:
i. Examining how school environment influence students’ academic performance.
ii. Identifying the influence of teachers on students’ academic performance.
iii. Analyze how school climate influence students’ academic performance.
iv. Encouraging educators and policymakers to reconsider the importance of school learning environments

1. How does the school learning environment influence students’ academic performance?
2. Are the Teachers aware that they have influence on students’ academic performance?
3. What perception constructs have a direct influence on students’ performance?
1.6 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
1. There is a significant relationship between the school learning environment and students’ academic performance.
2. There is a significant difference in teachers’ competencies and professional qualification of a specialist in the field.
3. There is a significant difference between the perceptions of male and female students towards their performance in Basic Science.
4. There is a significant relationship between students’ perceptions and Basic Science performance.
1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The study aim at revealing how much influence school learning environments have on student academic performance in Basic Science and how educators can begin making changes that will improve school learning environments. The Study is to cover the entire Lagos State but due to time finance and transportation constrain it will focus all attention on Ten (10) Junior Secondary Schools in both the rural and urban area of Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State.
1.8 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The findings from this study will be of immense benefits to the government, principals, teachers, parents as well as student researchers. It will provide the school principals the opportunity to improve in school supervision so as to ensure both qualities teaching and learning in the schools.
